WALKING & TREKKING IN LYCIAN TURKEY
We offer one week walking and trekking tours that take you through the beautiful mountain and coastal scenery of the Aegean Lycian Coast and include the local flora & fauna and some of the historical sites. The tours are a mix of Grade A (leisurely walk) and Grade B (moderate trek) that do require you to be in good health and reasonably fit. To suit a group's requirements any of these itineraries can be altered.
The tours cost £425 per person (excluding flights) and include all meals, accommodation and transport for groups from 6 to 12 people.
DAY 1 - You are met at Dalaman Airport and taken to your accommodation in a luxury villa. You can relax, swim and arrange yourselves prior to an evening meal and a discussion of the week's activities with your guides.
DAY 2 - After breakfast you are taken to Kaya Koy, a preserved village left after the population exchanges in 1923. A guided tour takes you through the stone houses, school and churches of the village formerly known as Levissi. After lunch the walk continues through the cobbled village streets and then over the hilltop and down through the forest to the Blue Lagoon at Olu Deniz. This trip allows for spectacular photography of the views across the fertile plain and down to the sea at Olu Deniz, From here we return to villa for your evening meal.
DAY 3 - Today you are taken to a variety of ancient sites with significant walking at each site. We start by visiting hilltop Tlos with rock-cut tombs, amphitheatre, fort and a walk to the Roman arched baths that overlook the Xanthos valley. Then we carry on to the remarkable Saklikent Gorge and walk some of the 18km canyon that is so steep and narrow that the floor is always in the shade. We have lunch next to the rushing icy spring waters before continuing to Xanthos. This was the ancient capital of Lycia and we do an extensive tour to see the rock face Lycian tombs with inscriptions and the Roman theatre. Then we travel to Patara where we have a walk along the 20km sandy beach and visit the remains of a large Roman city with amphitheatre, arches and many buildings. Finally we go to beautiful Kalkan for an evening meal and then back to the villa.
DAY 4 - This is a less exerting day. After breakfast you travel to Fethiye (ancient Telmessos) to see a variety of ancient sites. The guided tour includes the Lycian tomb of Amyntas, which after a steep climb provides stunning photographic views across Fethiye Bay and the 12 islands. You then go to the Crusader Fortress and to the Roman Theatre and finally end up in the old town (Paspatur) for lunch. The afternoon is left for you to wander Fethiye at your leisure and to explore the shops, visit the famous Market and maybe try out the local Turkish Bath (Haman). You have an evening meal at a local restaurant and then return to the villa.
DAY 5 - Today you do a long walk, taking about 6 hours for the round trip, to the ancient hilltop city of Cadianda. We start after breakfast and walk through nearby Uzumlu village and then start to climb a stony path through undisturbed pine forests with numerous plant species and a variety of wildlife. Eventually we reach the Roman walls of the city with preserved enormous water cisterns, a bath house and the Stadium. After strolling around the city we break for lunch and then continue through the Amphitheatre, Stoa and Agora and view Fethiye from the hilltop. We then pass more ruins and tombs to pick up the steep track back to Uzumlu village and see locals weaving on traditional looms. Then back to the villa to relax before going out for an evening meal.
DAY 6 - After breakfast we take transport and then walk to the ruins of Afkule Monastery on the cliffs with astounding views across the sea. The area is rich in flora, including many herbs, and fauna such as raptors, tortoises and wild boar. On the way down to Gemiler Beach you pass through pine forests and then have a BBQ lunch on the beach. Afterwards we take a boat to Gemiler Island (Nicholas Island) and then a boat tour along the beautiful Lycian coast visiting the many bays and coves including Butterfly Valley beneath Faralya. You leave the boat at Olu Deniz and stroll through the resort returning to Uzumlu for an evening meal and then back to the villa.
DAY 7 - After breakfast there is time to relax around the pool before departing for Dalaman Airport, we call at Katranci Beach on the way to upmarket Gocek for lunch. You should have had a lovely week and hopefully are not too exhausted!
NEEDS - Backpack for water bottle, sun glasses, sun-cream, waterproof, camera etc. Walking boots/shoes, a hat, a swimming costume and some warm clothing for the evenings are essential.
